Every now and then something comes out of the blue, like a bolt of lighting and stops you in your tracks - Chichenshed’s production did just that.
The story of mixed race boy Mischa Niering, whose untimely death at the age of 19 is beautifully told through his mother, using multi-media physical theatre and live music
Niering, who took part in a botched ram-raid in Sloane square in West London in October 2005, was killed in the subsequent police chase which forms the basis of the story line for the play.
To commemorate his life, his friends have put together this play which takes you through his life and tragic end.
As a father of two mixed race kids, I sat there thinking of my own life in bringing up my two. The play spoke to me in a way that only a film like, ‘Guess who’s coming to dinner?’ can. A film which the play sound-bites spectacularly well, to great effect.
There are many scenes that moved me as a distant father; the scene where Mischa is bonding with his dad had me in tears.
In the light of recent gun crime in London and other parts of the country, this work shows the stark effects on the family – the unglamorous downside, a potential generation lost to tragic circumstances.
